Can a tire with a nail in it be repaired?
It depends on where the nail is and how large the puncture is. If the nail is in the central tread area and the hole is ¼ inch (6mm) or smaller, the tire can almost always be safely repaired with a patch-plug combination. Nails in the sidewall or shoulder cannot be repaired.
What is the repairable zone on a tire?
The repairable zone is the central tread area — roughly the middle 75% of the tread width. This area has a solid steel belt that can hold a patch. The shoulder (where tread curves to sidewall) and sidewall flex constantly while driving and cannot be reliably patched.
Can I use a plug kit from the auto parts store?
String plug kits (the ones you insert from outside the tire without removing it from the wheel) are considered a temporary emergency fix only by the tire industry. The only permanent, safe repair is a patch-plug combination installed from inside the tire by a shop. A string plug alone is not a safe long-term repair.
What is a run-flat tire and can it be repaired?
Run-flat tires have reinforced sidewalls that let you drive limited distances after losing pressure. Most manufacturers state that run-flats that have been driven on while flat should NOT be repaired — the sidewall may have internal damage that isn't visible. Check your vehicle owner's manual and the tire manufacturer's guidelines.
My tire drove flat for a mile before I noticed — can it be repaired?
Possibly not. Driving on a flat tire, even a short distance, can damage the sidewall and internal structure from the wheel rim cutting into the rubber. A shop needs to inspect the inside of the tire. If there are cracks, creases, or separation in the sidewall or bead area, the tire must be replaced.
How much does a tire repair cost?
A professional patch-plug repair typically costs $15–$30 at most tire shops. Many shops include it free if you purchased the tires there. Compare that to a new tire ($80–$300+) — a repair is almost always worth it if the damage is in the repairable zone.
